The date of the unveiling was chosen to be exactly 80 years after Mill Cottages were bombed resulting in the deaths of five Long Ashton Residents. An image of Mill Cottages is engraved on the memorial (pictured left) as well as the names of the 5 casualities including three children aged 3, 4, and 9.

New memorial unveiled commemorating over 100 villagers
On 12 April a new memorial to over 100 villagers who have died in the service of their country was unveiled. HRH Princess Anne was planning to unveil the memorial but cancelled following the death of her father HRH Duke of Edinburgh. HM Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Annie Maw, stepped in so the ceremony went ahead.
The monument is certainly a fitting and beautiful testament to the sacrifice made by 104 parishioners. The 104 names comprise those who died in military conflicts since World War I as well as civilian casualties.
The stones used in the surrounding wall (pictured above) were taken from the former British Legion building at the bottom of Providence Lane.
