North Somerset Council has signed a lease on a new site for Nailsea Library. By next summer the library will relocate from its current site to 6-8 Colliers Walk, the former location of HSBC bank.
Libraries have been under threat as more people move online to access information and even books. However, the councils strategy is to have modern accessible libraries providing a lot more than lending books. This would include free access to computers, hosting community support and advice sessions, and well activities for families and people of all ages. You'll still be able to borrow books of course, with access to over 2.5 million titles through the LibrariesWest consortium.
The existing 50-year-old building in Somerset Square (above) is in poor condition and needs a lot of work. Rather than spend money on this a new site was deemed more appropriate. No decision has been made about what to do with the old site.
